this is my second piece for the parsons challenge, done last year when i was applying to colleges. the left image is the original, and was done using acrylic paint and tape on bristol.
my explanation for this piece is as follows:
Parsons Challenge Two
My second piece for the Parsons Challenge depicts buildings. When looking at a ‘skyline’ of buildings, people tend to notice the buildings rather than the sky. Unless the sky happens to appear more beautiful and distinguished as a result of a sunset, a particular cloud formation, etc., it is very often ignored. In this piece, I painted the sky blue, but left the buildings uncolored. The purpose of this was to draw the viewers’ eyes to the shape of the sky behind the buildings. The actual shape of the sky is apparent, and stands out more than the buildings.
I provided two views of the painting, so that, when flipped vertically, the sky seems to take on a life of its own, independent from the buildings. The flipped image gives the sky even more significance. In this image, the sky appears to be a silhouette of surreal, otherworldly buildings, with much more character than the buildings I created.
If I had given the original buildings detail and color, it would have been more difficult to show that negative space can be vital to a work of art, and that it can be just as engaging as the subject of that artwork. Negative spaces are often overlooked because they are either purposely left blank or merely neglected in favor of other aspects of an artwork. My goal with these pieces is to reaffirm the belief that negative spaces do serve an important purpose with any work of art.
